The Open is golf's oldest championship. The first event was held at Prestwick way back in 1860 when only eight players competed for the prize. Back then the format for the title was three rounds over a 12-hole course. Since then, The Open has been staged annually with the criteria changing to extend it to four days using the now traditional 18-hole course.
Each year the tournament is held at a different course with St Andrews being the most used course so far, staging it 28 times. It was last used in 2010 when Louis Oosthuizen won his first ever major, shooting a score of -17 to win by 7 shots.
The winner each year is presented with the Claret Jug, a famous silver jug that is recognised all around the world. First presented back in 1873, the jug is kept on permanent display in The Royal and Ancient Golf Clubhouse with the winner also getting a gold medal which they can keep.
The 140th Open Championship will be held at Royal St George's Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent. The last time the tournament was held there was in 2003, when Ben Curtis emerged as champion.
Open Championship betting is usually dominated by Woods, who has won 3 Claret Jugs since 2000. In 2009, Stewart Cink overcame huge Open Championship betting odds to land the tournament after winning a play-off with Tom Watson. Cink is not the first player in recent years to suprise The Open betting market: the likes of Todd Hamilton (2004), Ben Curtis (2003) and Paul Lawrie (1999) have all been shock winners. And in 2010, Louis Oosthuizen continued the trend of big price champions.
